History

The idea for Union Independent School began with Union Baptist Church Pastor Ken Hammond as part of a larger church effort to revitalize the 172-block area known as “Northeast-Central Durham.”

The church, founded in 1897, has been an integral part of the community for more than 100 years. Under Hammond’s leadership, the church’s 4,000-plus members have recommitted themselves to the area and to its economic and social improvement.

In 2000, the church opened its new $3.5 million worship center on North Roxboro Road. In 2005, church members agreed to fund the $8 million construction of the new K-8 school and family life complex to serve neighborhood youth.

A celebratory groundbreaking took place on July 25, 2006, and the school’s beautiful, state-of-the-art, 49,000 square foot facility is currently under construction with an anticipated completion date of late Spring 2009.

Union Independent School will open its doors for the first day of school on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, and will follow a year-round academic schedule. The school will open with Grades K-2, and will add a new kindergarten class each year until it eventually becomes a K-8 independent school. The school will operate independently of Union Baptist Church and will have its own Board of Directors.
